The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved the first home remedy for vitiligo in a breakthrough to treat the condition that affects millions of Americans.

And Opzelura, developed by the American company Wilmington, is a medical cream that can be applied directly to discoloration spots on the skin of people aged 12 and over, according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.

It is noteworthy that this is the first such drug to receive such approval.

How to use it

The cream is applied to non-pigmented spots of the skin twice a day. It should not be used on more than 10% of the body's surface area.

It may take up to 24 weeks for the drug to show effectiveness in many patients. For others, it may take up to a year to reach its full potential.

In addition, the drug showed promising results in a phase III clinical trial, which was recently completed and included 600 participants. Those who used the cream showed a significant improvement in their skin tone, with half reaching the threshold of successful repigmentation after a year.

About 15% of the participants in the experiment managed to reach this point in just 24 weeks.

Vitiligo affects people of all skin types, although it is more noticeable in people with dark skin. According to estimates, vitiligo affects 1-2 percent of the world's population, although it is not fatal or contagious.

While it affects between 1.5 and 3 million Americans, according to official data. In some cases, the discolored spots are caused by the body's inability to produce enough melanin.
