What are the positive results of gastric banding operations?

Dutch researchers have lauded the amazing cognitive positive results of gastric banding for weight loss.

The researchers found that the performance of obese patients in cognitive tests after the weight loss surgery by “gastric band” surgery is better than it was before, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.

Doctors believe that the drop in blood pressure caused by extreme weight loss can enhance blood flow to the brain.

Experts suggested that patients after surgery also spend less time thinking about food, which frees up brain capacity, which may help them avoid memory loss conditions such as dementia later on.

Previous research has linked weight loss to improved brain power, which allows people to better prioritize tasks, filter out distractions and control impulses.

Gastric bypass

The latest study examined how bariatric surgery affects the mental performance of 129 patients who underwent memory, speech and attention tests before gastric bypass surgery in 2018 and after it in 2021.

Forty patients also underwent MRI scans before and after to see how the structure of the brain had changed.

Dr Amanda Killian of Radboud University Medical Center presented the findings at the European Congress on Obesity in Dublin, and said patients' memory and attention were still improving two years after surgery.

She said: “Several studies have shown that vascular problems found in morbid obesity are risk factors for the development of neurodegeneration, cognitive decline and dementia, pointing to the improvement in patients’ mood after surgery and their desire to exercise.

It is noteworthy that about 7000 Britons undergo bariatric surgeries, such as gastric banding and other weight-loss operations, every year.
